みなさんは「不定代名詞」って聞いたことありますか？英語の「不定代名詞」とは、特定の物を指さずに人や物などを表現するときに使われる「代名詞」のことです。わかりやすく言うと「ハッキリと指せない名詞」のことです。
"some", "any" なども不定代名詞ですが、今回は、なかな使い方のコツを掴むのが難しい「either, neither, none」 の使い分けについてご紹介させていただきます。まず初めに以下の問題を解いてみてください。
Because _____ the employees of that company belong to the Labor Union, they don't launch a strike.
(A) none of
(B) each of
(C) either of
(D) neither of
正解は(A)です。
「その会社の従業員は誰も労働組合に所属していないのでストライキを起こさない」
→動詞が "belong" なので、主語は複数扱いされています。"each of" や "(n)either of" は後ろに〈the + 複数形〉を取りますが、単数扱いです。一方で〈none + of + 複数形〉は複数扱いにすることができます。
either の基本的語法：「2つ」が前提
① either + A or B 「AかBのどちらか一方」
② either + 単数形 「どちらかの～」「いずれの～も」
③ either + of the / one's 複数形・代名詞「～のうちどちらか」「～のいずれも」
※“either”は、原則「単数」の扱い
例）Either of the shirts is his.
「そのシャツのどちらかが彼のものです」
neither の基本的語法「2つ」が前提
① neither + A nor B 「AもBもどちらも～ない」
② neither + 単数形「どちらの ... も～ない」
③ neither + of the / one's 複数形・代名詞「… のどちらも～ない」
→“neither” 自体に否定の意味があるので、「動詞」を否定の形にしない
※“neither” も原則「単数」扱い
例）Neither of them has a girlfriend.
「彼らのうちどちらも彼女はいません」
例）Smith neither drinks nor smokes.
「スミスは酒もたばこもやらない」
noneの基本的語法：「3つ」以上が前提
① none + of + the 可算名詞の複数形「どれも～ない」
* 複数扱いが多いが、単数扱いも可
② none + of + the 不可算名詞「どれも～ない」
* 単数扱い
例）None of the information was true.
「その情報のどれも真実ではなかった」
例）None of the three books were interesting.
「その3冊の本はどれも面白くなかった」
